Around 25 years ago our Managing Director, Richard Wells, visited The Gambia in West Africa for a short holiday. Gambia is the smallest country in Africa (population 2.45 million) and one of the poorest countries. Over half of the population live in poverty, the main sources of income being farming, fishing and, especially, tourism boasting splendid coastline and colourful birdlife.
Richard met a young hotel security guard called Saihou Jarju and started a strong friendship that has continued to this day punctuated by Richard’s regular annual holidays to meet Saihou’s wife and growing family. Over the years Richard has raised funds to support the local community and to help educate Saihou’s children, the oldest of which is named after Richard.
In December 2020 the Goldmans’ team collected donations of clothes, shoes and children’s toys to ship out to Gambia. See photo of Richard and some members of Goldmans team getting ready to load up the van to start the long journey to Africa.
We are delighted to report that the shipping container arrived in April 2021 and the donations arrived at their final destination via local taxis.
